At the end of 2019, UNESCO proclaimed 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.
This represents a new impetus for countries, within the so-called 2030 Agenda, which includes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approved by UN member states in 2015.
Among these objectives are:
- End global poverty.
- Eradicate famine.
- Achieve access to safe drinking water for all humanity.
- Take care of the planet.
The Basic Sciences encompass the study of areas such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. They are at the base of the greatest technological advances and the International Year aims to highlight their crucial role for sustainable development and emphasize their contributions to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
According to the UN, the basic sciences provide the essential means to face crucial challenges such as:
- Universal access to food.
- Energy, health coverage and communication technologies.
- Understand the impact of the planet’s nearly 8 billion inhabitants.
- Limit or reduce the impact of living beings on the planet to solve problems such as the reduction of the ozone layer, climate change, depletion of natural resources and the extinction of living species.
In Nutty Scientists we promote the love of basic sciences in children and we hope that this year will be a boost for the sustainable development goals and the 2030 Agenda.
