Archaeology is one of the most exciting scientific fields because archaeologists are responsible for reconstructing the history of ancient civilisations to help us understand important events in the history of humanity.

One of the most important and amazing events of archaeology was 96 years ago when the tomb of Tutankhamun, often called King Tut, was discovered with many artefacts and objects inside. If we go back to Ancient Egypt, we can understand why many objects were found in the tombs of the pharaohs.

The ancient Egyptians believed in life after death and were buried with their belongings and with things they might need in the afterlife.

Here’s some interesting fact about King Tut.

  1. He was the most famous pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.
  2. He was known as the “Child Pharaoh” because of his early ascension to the throne at 12 years old, and then his untimely death at age 20.
  3. His Tomb is a spectacular pyramid.
  4. His grave was very small. It took 3,245 years to find.
  5. His tomb was discovered in Luxor in 1922 by the archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter.
  6. Although credit for the discovery went to Carter, it was really Hussein, a 10-year-old boy who brought water to the workers at the excavation site in the Valley of the Kings, who ran into a step in the sand, thus discovering the tomb.
  7. His tomb was considered one of the few that had remained practically intact before the activity of grave robbers.

What exactly do archaeologists do?

    1. They are professionals of anthropology. Specialising in the history of the human being as known through remains, such as bones, tissues, ceramics, etc.
    2. They can specialise in a geographical area, a historical period or an object.
    3. Their most important functions are the excavation, identification, registration and historical conservation of remains.
    4. Another part of their work involves laboratory analysis such as research and heritage management.
    5. They work hand in hand with surveyors and excavation specialists.
    6. They use geophysical techniques or aerial photographs in order to identify archaeological sites.
    7. They advise governments on archaeological site conservation issues.

At Nutty Scientists, we believe that knowing about the past allows us to understand the present and improve the future. For this reason, we have different workshops and scientific shows in which, through fun experiments and demonstrations, children assume the role of different scientists like archaeologists and adopt their way of seeing the world.
